Opening an NPP File
The NPP file type is primarily associated with Art Explosion Publisher Pro.
What is an NPP file?
Overview: NPP files are project or configuration containers used by different applications. They do not have one standard format but vary with the software that created them.
Usage Details:
- Art Explosion Publisher Pro: In many cases, an NPP file is a desktop publishing project created by Art Explosion Publisher Pro. These files use a Microsoft Compound File structure to store layout data including text, images, and design elements. For more details, visit Nova Development.
- Nitro Pro Project: Some NPP files are project files from Nitro Pro. They are typically packaged as a ZIP archive containing project settings and page information. More information is available at Nero.
- Notepad++ Project: Another common use is for Notepad++ projects. These files save file lists, settings, and session information for the text editor. See Notepad++ for specifics.
- Nitro Pro Plug-in / Plugin Configuration: A few NPP files are used as plug-in containers, sometimes compiled as an EXE. They hold configuration data for extending software functionality. Additional details can be found at Nitro.
FilExt.com notes: Because these files use internally different formats like Microsoft Compound, ZIP, or EXE, using a generic viewer may not display them correctly. It is best to open an NPP file with the native application that created it. Backup your file before attempting any conversion or edit.

NPP file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the NPP files looks like this:
The NPP file extension is rarely used and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in NPP files:
- 30% of all NPP files utilize the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Composite Document File format or OLE2 compound document format. This general-purpose file format provides a file-system-like structure within a file for the storage of arbitrary, application-specific streams of data. Header signature for the CFB format with 8-byte Hex value D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). Each NPP file has an application name, which is Nova Development Art Explosion Publisher Pro. The file contains sections SCFFPreview, Signature, SummaryInformation, contents, PagePlusSummaryInfo and WizardHTML. The average file size is 140 KB with most files being between 14 KB and 860 KB in size. The file type is old but is used even today. Such files sometimes refer to grade and card.
- 25% of all NPP files start with the magic bytes lsdf, which are always the first bytes of this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are often between 170 KB and 8 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Default and lsdf.
All the rest of the NPP files (45%) have different formats, often e.g. ZIP and EXE. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your NPP file!
