Opening an ODM File
The ODM file type is primarily associated with OverDrive Media Console.
What is an ODM file?
This file extension can indicate different file formats that belong to specific applications. OverDrive Media files are XML-based and are used by the OverDrive Media Console to manage digital media content. They store metadata and content information for use in digital lending platforms. Visit OverDrive Media for more details.
Another use for an ODM file is as an OpenDocument Text Master Document. This format packages document data in a ZIP container. It is designed to manage master documents and linked parts in applications like OpenOffice.org Writer and Apache OpenOffice. More information is available at OpenOffice.
A less common use is as a memo file format for dictionary data. This variant is used by programs such as GoldenDict to store and organize dictionary entries in a specialized manner.
If you have an ODM file and are unsure which format it is, check the file content (for example, by opening it in a text editor) to see if it is XML-based or a ZIP archive, and then open it using the matching software.
- OverDrive Media file: XML-based, used for digital media content.
- OpenDocument Text Master Document: ZIP-packaged, used to manage master documents.
- Memo File format: Custom format for dictionary data used by GoldenDict.
How do you open ODM files?
You need a suitable software like OverDrive Media Console to open an ODM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ODM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ODM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

ODM format details:
To find out what program is needed to open ODM files, you need to determine the file format. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the ODM files:
As a file extension, ODM isn't very common and predominantly uses a uniform format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 70% of all ODM files are OverDrive Media console media control files, which are using the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. The average file size is 4 KB with most files being between 4 KB and 5 KB in size. It is a modern file type. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. <?xml version="1.0"?>, OverDriveMedia id, <AcquisitionUrl>https://ofs.contentreserve.com/MP3License, <License> and ODMVersion="3.0.0.0" OMCVersion="3.0.0.0">. Some examples of file names are multipart.odm. These files can be linked to your, potterandthe, book, life, america, habits, series and howto.
- 20% of all ODM files use the ZIP format, i.e. an ODM file contains several compressed files. Such a ZIP file contains 16 to 19 files. File names inside are always content.xml, layout-cache, manifest.rdf, meta.xml, mimetype, settings.xml, styles.xml, \Configurations2\, \Configurations2\accelerator\current.xml, \Configurations2\floater\, \Configurations2\images\, \Configurations2\images\Bitmaps\, \Configurations2\menubar\, \Configurations2\popupmenu\, \Configurations2\progressbar\, \Configurations2\statusbar\, \Configurations2\toolbar\, \Configurations2\toolpanel\ and \META-INF\manifest.xml. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. The files are on average 20 KB in size and range from 13 KB to 250 KB. The files contain the following words: mimetypeapplication/vnd.oasis.opendocument.text-masterPK, Configurations2 and accelerator.
All other ODM files (10%) have no consistent format, often e.g. Memo. If you want to find out which format your ODM file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .odm file to view".
