What is an OMF file?

OMF files mostly belong to Avid Media Composer. OMF files are container files that hold project details. They follow the Open Media Framework standard.
In the most common use, these files are used for video editing with Avid Media Composer (avid.com). They store project metadata, sequence information, and file links.
Some OMF files are STALKER animation files used in 3ds Max. They contain game object animation data and may work with conversion tools like OMFConverter (3ds Max Overview on Autodesk).
A smaller group serves as an optimized Map Format in Adobe Photoshop, sometimes called an Open Media Framework image.

Used in professional video editing systems.

How do you open OMF files?

You need a suitable software like Avid Media Composer to open an OMF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To find out what program is needed to open OMF files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. The OMF file type includes different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 60% of all OMF files have the same signature 00 6F 6D 66 69 3A 64 61 74 61 3A 4E 6F 44 61 74. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are often between 1 MB and 160 MB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. omfi:data:Int16, omfi:data:Int8, omfi:data:NoDatakind, omfi:data:UInt16, omfi:data:UInt32, omfi:data:Char and omfi:data:UInt8. These files can be linked to sound, audio, sequence, online, music, offline, promo and film.
• 15% of all OMF files start with the bytes 0E 00 00 00 crucial for this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are 11 KB to 2 MB in size, with a median of 110 KB. Such OMF files store data about animation, hand, stalker, detector and hands.
