What is an ONETOC2 file

ONETOC2 files mostly belong to OneNote by Microsoft. ONETOC2 is the file extension used by a OneNote table of contents file. OneNote is a digital note taking application from Microsoft that is also a part of the Microsoft Office productivity suite. The ONETOC2 file is a part of a OneNote notebook and is created when a notebook is created by selecting New in the File menu. ONETOC2 files are binary files and are not meant to be opened by the user. They store an index that determines the order of note-taking sections in the notebook and are referenced by OneNote to display the notebook contents in the correct order. ONETOC2 files are located in the notebook folder. If the ONETOC2 file for a notebook is deleted, the notebook's sections are displayed in alphabetical order, which can then be reordered manually. The file format for table of contents file up to OneNote 2003 was ONETOC. In OneNote 2007, this was replaced by ONETOC2.

How to open ONETOC2 files

You need a suitable software like OneNote from Microsoft to open an ONETOC2 file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
