What is an OVPN file

OVPN files mostly belong to OpenVPN by OpenVPN. OVPN is the file extension associated with an OpenVPN configuration file. OpenVPN is a virtual private network (VPN) application. The OVPN file stores settings used to establish a VPN connection in OpenVPN. It is a simple text file that can be opened in any text editor. An OpenVPN installation includes sample configuration files. Sample configuration files are stored in the sample-config-files directory of the OpenVPN source distribution. If the installation was done from a RPM or DEB package, then sample configuration files are located in /usr/share/doc/packages/openvpn or /usr/share/doc/openvpn. In Windows, sample configuration files can be accessed by selecting OpenVPN in the Start menu and then clicking on OpenVPN Sample Configuration Files. The file names for sample configuration files are server.OVPN and client.OVPN. Users can also create custom configuration files in OpenVPN. These are stored in the Program Files\OpenVPN\config folder. In the Unix operating system, OpenVPN configuration files have the CONF extension.

How to open OVPN files

You need a suitable software like OpenVPN to open an OVPN file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. 90% of all OVPN files belong to OpenVPN profile. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The files are often between 2 KB and 6 KB in size. It is a modern file type. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as client, nobind, resolv-retry infinite, persist-key, persist-tun, dev tun, proto udp, auth, cipher, remote-cert-tls server and random. Such files sometimes refer to nordvpn, openvpn, vpnbook, surfshark, prod, comsurfshark, client, config and server.
2% of all OVPN files use the same file format, which have the signature client . These files contain text and words, not binary data. OVPN files can be up to 6 KB in size, but are often around 4 KB - 5 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as client, dev tun, verify-x509-name, emailAddress, remote, SophosApplianceCertificate, route, proto tcp and proto udp.

All other OVPN files (8%) have no consistent format, such as setenv, client, host and remote. They are often associated with protonvpn, free, vpngate, freeopenvpn, opengw or maxis.
