Opening a PBIX File
The PBIX file type is primarily associated with Power BI Desktop.
What is a PBIX file?
Format: PBIX documents contain different data and metadata used for visualization of the data that's being shared. The document itself has an XLSX-esque structure, being a package containing files and folders which contain all of the data and configuration. A typical PBIX document will contain a "Report" folder, and the following files:
- ContentTypes
- DataMashup
- DataModel
- DiagramState
- Metadata
- SecurityBindings
- Settings
- Version
Usage: PBIX files are created using the desktop application and uploaded to the online service from which it is shared. Only the desktop version can create these files, while all other versions (like the mobile app) can download and view them.
How can I open a PBIX file?
You need a suitable software like Power BI Desktop from Microsoft to open a PBIX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PBIX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PBIX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

PBIX file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the PBIX files:
The PBIX extension is quite commonly used. The file itself mainly uses a defined PBIX format. The file formats most commonly found in PBIX files are:
- 99% of all PBIX files use the ZIP algorithm, that is, a PBIX file includes multiple compressed files. A PBIX file can contain up to 60 files (mostly 9 - 19). Common included file names are DataModel, DiagramLayout, Metadata, SecurityBindings, Settings, Version, [Content_Types].xml, \Report\Layout, \Report\LinguisticSchema, \Report\StaticResources\ and \Report\StaticResources\SharedResources\. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. PBIX files are between 63 KB and 16 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. [Content_Types].xml and Version. Such files are related to dashboard, report, data, power, analysis, project, auswertung, powerbi and sample.
All other PBIX files (1%) have no consistent format. The category is sales, review, performance, reporting, overview, software, draft, cost or demo. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your PBIX file!
