What is a PCAPNG file

PCAPNG files mostly belong to Wireshark by The Wireshark team. PCAPNG is a format used to record captured network packet traces to a file. It was designed to be an extensible successor to the original PCAP format used by tcpdump and other software using the libpcap library. Currently, only Wireshark can read and write PCAPNG files, while libpcap (and thus software using it) can only read some of these files.

Goals: PCAPNG was created with the following goals in mind:

• Extensibility - The possibility of adding new standard capabilities to the format over time, and the ability for third parties to be able to enrich the information embedded in the file with proprietary extensions;
• Portability - The file must contain all the information needed to read the data independently from the network, hardware, and operating system fo the machine that made the capture;
• Merge/Append data: The possibility to add data at the end of a given file, while the file remains readable.

Structure: A capture file is organized in blocks, that are appended one to another to form the file. All the blocks share a common format, having the following fields in the following order: Block Type - A unique unsigned value that identifies the block; Block Total Length - an unsigned value giving the total size of the block, in octets; Block Body - The content of the block; Block Total Length (Again) - This is field is written twice to permit backward file navigation.

How to open a PCAPNG file

You need a suitable software like Wireshark to open a PCAPNG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PCAPNG file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. To find out what program is needed to open PCAPNG files, you need to determine the file format. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. The PCAPNG extension is very commonly found and mainly uses a defined PCAPNG format. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 95% of all PCAPNG files are Wireshark PCAP Next Generation Dump File Format files. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. A typical file size is 660 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The following keywords are characteristic: Dumpcap (Wireshark), with SSE4, build, 64-bit Windows, Intel(R) Core(TM) and 64-bit Windows 10. Such files sometimes refer to capture, wireshark, shark, pcap, traffic, trace, flag, network and packet.
• 3% of all PCAPNG files start with the bytes Ôò¡, which are crucial for this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are on average 180 KB in size and range from 1 KB to 9 MB. A usual file name is webcapt.pcapng. Such files are related to ethernet, fast and vlan.

All other PCAPNG files (2%) have no consistent format, often e.g. GZIP and HTML. Files like these are sometimes linked to dump, logs, challenge, data, http or captura.
