What is a PCX file?

PCX files mostly belong to Photoshop by Adobe. PCX is the filename extension of bitmap images stored in the Picture eXchange format that was originally used by DOS platforms, fax machines, and scanners. A PCX file may contain a 1-bit black and white image, (24-bit) true color image, or an 8-bit grayscale image compressed using Run-Length encoding. The contents of PCX files are broadly divided into a 128-byte header, image data, and an optional 256-color palette for color images. PCX image format was originally the native image file format of PC Paintbrush graphics editor, however, it is supported by image processing programs such as GIMP and Photoshop despite the wide adoption of superior bitmap formats such as BMP. PCX is also the filename extension of archive files saved in the PCX Library format developed by Genus Microprogramming. This PCX library format is mainly used to store generic game data such as sounds, graphics, settings, textures, and other assets.

How can I open a PCX file?

You need a suitable software like Photoshop to open a PCX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PCX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PCX file directly in the browser:. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. The PCX file extension is used very often and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. But the following two file formats are common:

95% of all PCX files belong to PCX bitmap. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are on average 47 KB in size and range from 2 KB to 370 KB. This file type was primarily in use more than 20 years ago. Such PCX files store data about seite, logo, character, screen, credit, back, baize, quake and data.
1% of all PCX files are associated with PCX Library game data container. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are often between 210 KB and 210 KB in size.
