Opening PCX Files
The PCX file type is primarily associated with Photoshop.
What is a PCX file?
How can I open a PCX file?
You need a suitable software like Photoshop to open a PCX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PCX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PCX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

- Photoshop by Adobe
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. PCX files are often referred to as Photoshop raster images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Irfanview (image) by Irfan SkiljanIrfanview is a Windows-based image viewer and raster graphics editor for making minor modifications to images. Users may add text, effects, clip art, color adjustments etc. to images edited with Irfanview. Some image formats supported by Irfanview include PCX, PNG, BMP, TIFF, and JPG. This file format is classified as Raster Image. Related links: PCX

- PCX/GX Library Unpacker (game data archive) by CTPAX-XPCX/GX Library Unpacker is a lightweight archive program used to extract the contents of library/archive files saved in GX or PCX format. PCX libraries are often used as game data archives. This file format is classified as Game.
PCX file format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the PCX files is as follows:
The PCX file extension is used very often and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 95% of all PCX files belong to PCX bitmap. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are on average 47 KB in size and range from 2 KB to 370 KB. This file type was primarily in use more than 20 years ago. Such PCX files store data about seite, logo, character, screen, credit, back, baize, quake and data.
- 1% of all PCX files are associated with PCX Library game data container. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are often between 210 KB and 210 KB in size.
All other PCX files (4%) have no uniform format. Often described as nachtrag, anhang, label, shade, fsbb, texture or graf. If you want to find out which format your PCX file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .pcx file to view this image".

a pcx image is a special file format by Adobe and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with PCX files
- Associate the PCX file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open images. Because only the current version supports the latest PCX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Adobe manufacturer website after an available Photoshop update.
- To make sure that your PCX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PCX file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
