Opening a POR File
The POR file type is primarily associated with SPSS.
What is a POR file?
- Format: When an SPSS Statistics Portable file is exported from SPSS, the file extension POR is used. This format was designed to be a portable format for data transfer to versions of SPSS running on other operating systems. The format was designed to support various character encodings, including ASCII and EBCDIC.
- Structure: Inside this portable file, a lot of information is written, among which are all variables from the current dataset (variable names, variable and value labels, missing-value flags, and print and write formats). At a basic level, these files consist of a series of 80 character lines. Every line ends with a "carriage-return" and/or "line-feed" character. These new-line indicators are only used to avoid length limits imposed by some operating systems and to allow for data transfer via a textual format; they are not meaningful. From a "higher" point of view, the information inside a POR file is formatted into "records". A single record consists of a single-character tag identifying the type of record, followed by a sequence of strings and/or numeric fields.
How can I open a POR file?
You need a suitable software like SPSS to open a POR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your POR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a POR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert POR files:
- SPSS by IBM
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. POR files are often referred to as SPSS data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Painter (portfolio file) by CorelCorel Painter is a raster-based graphics editor and illustrator designed to precisely simulate the appearance and behavior of traditional media associated with drawing, painting, and printmaking. This functional creative tool is intended for professional digital artists. POR file is a portfolio data file. This POR file type entry is obsoleted and no longer supported. This file format is classified as Data. Related links: Knowledge Base, Support, Corel Painter on Wikipedia
POR file extension format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the POR files looks like this:
As a file extension, POR isn't very common and includes different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 35% of all POR files internally use the ZIP format, that is, a POR file includes multiple compressed files. The number of files included is on average 6 and ranges from 6 to 8. File names are e.g. index.xml, \herolab\lead1.xml and \herolab\portfolio.xml. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. The files are on average 24 KB in size and range from 16 KB to 85 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. index.xml. These files are attributed to candy and level.
- 35% of all POR files start with the magic bytes ÁâÃÉÉ@â×ââ@×ÖÙã@ÆÉÓÅ@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ASCII SPSS PORT FILE , which are always the first bytes of this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The files are on average 1 MB in size and range from 9 KB to 25 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: 00000-0000-0000-0000--------------------!3#))0303300/240&),%00000000000000000000, 0200002 and @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ASCII SPSS PORT FILE. An example of a file name is 04075-0001-Data.por. Such files sometimes refer to data, ipip, adult and csfr.
The remaining 30% of all POR files are files with no common format, often e.g. SPSS Portable ASCII Data, XML and common. Files like these are sometimes linked to pacotes or sample. If you want to find out which format your POR file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .por file to view".

a por portable data file is a special file format by IBM and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with POR files
- Associate the POR file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open portable data files. Because only the current version supports the latest POR file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the IBM manufacturer website after an available SPSS update.
- To make sure that your POR file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .POR file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
