What is a POS file?

POS files mostly belong to GPS Pathfinder Office by Trimble. POS is a data file used by the Posgen tool. Posgen is a command-line only tool for the manipulation and creation of POS (position) files from Atom Probe Tomography (APT). Using this tool, a wide variety of "operations" can be performed, where an operation is a small subroutine that works on a point cloud (a series of points in space). The program is primarily aimed at users who undertake data analysis of atom probe datasets, who would like to minimise the amount of computer programming they need to undertake.

Operations: Possible operations in Posgen include:

  • Geometric operations (cutting, scaling, rotating),
  • Compositional (obtain compositions or profiles, drop unranged data),
  • File format conversions (pos to tapsim, pos to text),
  • Data synthesis (crystal generation)
  • Statistical analyses (clustering), and others.

Structure: POS files contain a list of x, y, z, and mass-to-charge data, which are in the form of a 3D point cloud. This file is a four-field fixed width record file, with an integer number of entries. The file is uncompressed raw 32-bit IEEE754 floating point data, and can be loaded using most languages relatively easily.

Compatibility: This tool, and thus the file, have been designed to work on Linux-based systems, such as CentOS, Fedora, Debian, etc.

How to open a POS file

You need a suitable software like GPS Pathfinder Office to open a POS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your POS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a POS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

This file format is classified as Graphics. Related links: Manual, Support, FAQ
  5. WinHex (file or disk offsets and description storage) by X-Ways
WinHex is a universal hexadecimal editor designed for computer forensics, data recovery, low-level data processing, and IT security. It is a tool for emergency use like inspecting and editing files, recovering deleted files or lost data from hard drives with corrupt file systems, or from digital camera cards. POS files are used to store a selected file or disk offsets along with a textual description. This file format is classified as Data. Related links: Manual, Forum, Format, WinHex on Wikipedia

POS file format:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our examination of the POS files comes to the following conclusion:

An POS file includes a lot of different file formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

All other POS files (80%) have no consistent format, such as Module, Adobe, Lucene and SITE. Files like these are sometimes linked to lucene, bottom, wifi or rover. If you want to find out which format your POS file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .pos file to analyze".

How to solve problems with POS files

  • Associate the POS file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open position descriptions files. Because only the current version supports the latest POS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Trimble manufacturer website after an available GPS Pathfinder Office update.
  • To make sure that your POS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .POS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
