What is a PPD file

PPD files mostly belong to ProfiCAD by Vaclav Jedlicka. A PPD file contains information about electrical/electronic components symbols and layers used by ProfiCAD electronic circuit/board design software. Its contents are saved as plain or XML-like text. ProfiCAD version 3 saved parts descriptions in a PPD file. PPD is also the filename extension of a program description document saved in Open Software Description Format (OSD). PageMaker desktop publishing and page layout design software used PostScript printer description saved in a different type of PPD file. Such a page description contains fonts, paper dimensions, resolution, and other information which a driver uses to determine a printer's capabilities.

How to open a PPD file

You need a suitable software like ProfiCAD to open a PPD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PPD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PPD file directly in the browser:. How to extract texts from PPD files or capture a screenshot to PDF, JPG, DOCX, TXT, ...

PPD file format:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. The PPD file type is a very commonly used file extension and includes different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:

• 60% of all PPD files are associated with PostScript Printer Description. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The average file size is 62 KB with most files being between 11 KB and 170 KB in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. The keywords *PPD-Adobe: "4.3", Copyright, this, Printer Description File, Description File, CANON, Permission, PostScript(R) Printer, granted, software and free are typical for these files. Such files are related to cnir, cnadvc, series, printer, epson, cnad, postscript, brother, canon and ricoh.
• 15% of all PPD files belong to ProfiCAD symbols. The files are using the common file format XML. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The average file size is 1 KB with most files being between 370 bytes and 9 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: <document type="ProfiCAD, ProfiCAD ppd, version, <layers current="0">, n="" m="", t="" v="", <layer name="0" v="1">, repo and left. The file name S7-1200.ppd is typical for these files. Such files sometimes refer to filter, siemens, logo, breaker and circuit.

All the rest of the PPD files (25%) have different formats, the following 4 formats exist: XML and ArcSoft. Files like these are sometimes linked to laserjet, samsung, adpdf, print, cnrc, generic, adrp or cups.
