What is a PPT file?

PPT files mostly belong to PowerPoint by Microsoft. PPT stands for PowerPoint PresenTation file. The PPT file format is used as a data file by the PowerPoint software, offered as a part of the Office Suite developed by Microsoft.

• Main Use: Microsoft PowerPoint software is used to create and share business, educational or personal presentations primarily on Windows PCs and Macs platforms. The content in the PPT presentations is spread across pages known as slides. Each slide is capable of holding various types of information such as images, animations, formatted text, and audio/video files. The data in the PPT file is saved in a binary format. PPT files can be created using the several default templates that come pre-installed with the software or the user has the option to start from scratch and design from the ground up. PPT was the default presentation file format for Microsoft PowerPoint 97 to Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 versions until it was replaced by the XML-based PPTX file format from the subsequent versions to reduce compatibility issues with third-party applications.
• Adoption: On Windows PCs, software such as Microsoft PowerPoint, Corel Presentations, SoftMaker Office, OpenOffice Impress, and WPS Office Presentation can open PPT files. On macOS platforms, PPT files can be opened using Microsoft PowerPoint, Apple Keynote, OpenOffice Impress, and WPS Office Presentation can be used to access PPT presentation files. OpenOffice Impress and WPS Office Presentation can open PPT files in Linux systems as well. Google Slides is a browser-based software that can open PPT files.

How to open PPT files

You need a suitable software like PowerPoint to open a PPT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. PPT file format:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. The CLSID (class identifier of a Windows component object) is 64818d10-4f9b-11cf-86ea-00aa00b929e8 or 00044851-0000-0000-c000-000000000046. Sections and streams in the file are named SummaryInformation, Current User, Pictures, PowerPoint Document and DocumentSummaryInformation. The files are 160 KB to 8 MB in size, with a median of 1 MB. The file type was developed 20 years ago and is still in use today. These files are often associated with chapter, lecture, presentation, chap, human, kinetics, intro and week.
• 4% of all PPT files use ZIP compression, i.e. a PPT file contains several compressed files. The 25 to 220 compressed files are called [Content_Types].xml, \_rels\.rels, \docProps\app.xml, \docProps\core.xml, \docProps\thumbnail.jpeg, \ppt\_rels\presentation.xml.rels, \ppt\media\image1.jpeg, \ppt\media\image1.png, \ppt\presProps.xml, \ppt\presentation.xml, \ppt\tableStyles.xml and \ppt\viewProps.xml. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. PPT files can be up to 59 MB in size, but are often around 64 KB - 10 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as [Content_Types].xml. These files are often associated with pulmonaires, embolies, htap and fileminimizer.
