Opening a PREFS File
The PREFS file type is primarily associated with Eclipse.
What is a PREFS file?
Usage examples include:
How to open PREFS files
You need a suitable software like Eclipse to open a PREFS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PREFS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PREFS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. PREFS files are often referred to as Eclipse settings because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

PREFS file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the PREFS files:
PREFS is not a commonly used file extension and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 25% of all PREFS files are associated with Eclipse Preferences. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The files are 92 bytes to 780 bytes in size, with a median of 430 bytes. It is a modern file type. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. eclipse.preferences.version=1, targetPlatform and org.eclipse.jdt.core.compiler.codegen.inlineJsrBytecode=enabled. A common filename is org.eclipse.jdt.core.prefs or org.eclipse.core.resources.prefs. Files like these are sometimes connected to katalon.
- 9% of all PREFS files store the data in the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. Most of these files are 320 bytes to 1 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, Tracker and name. A common filename is tracker.prefs.
All the rest of the PREFS files (66%) have different formats, such as Eclipse Preferences, Java, MAX and eyJ. Sometimes used for gstatus, status, save, server or fltk. If you want to find out what your PREFS file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
Technical Data for PREFS File Extension
a prefs configuration file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with PREFS files
- Associate the PREFS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open configuration files. Because only the current version supports the latest PREFS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Eclipse update.
- To make sure that your PREFS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
