Opening PSP Files

The PSP file type is primarily associated with PaintShop.

PSPFile Extension PSP
File extension: PSP
File type:  multi-layer image

What is a PSP file?

PSP files mostly belong to PaintShop by Corel. PSP filename extension is associated with images created by earlier versions of PaintShop Pro raster graphics editor. These PSP files are considered "picture tubes" as they contain multi-layer images without a background and they can be merged with other images to produce a final image that will be exported from the program. PSP is also the filename extension of the user preferences (settings) file used by Photoshop raster graphics editor. This file also contains settings for editing/painting tools and panel actions. Civil 3D, a building information modeling and documentation software, saves pond shape definitions as ASCII text in PSP files. Webpages that are stored as PL/SQL Server Pages use PSP filename extension. Such PSP files contain HTML tags, CSS styles, JavaScript code, and (PL/SQL) server-side scripts that dynamically inject the results of SQL queries into web pages. You can view the "unprocessed" contents of PSP webpages using plain text editors.

How to open PSP files

You need a suitable software like PaintShop to open a PSP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PSP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PSP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

PSP file format details:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below you will find our evaluation of the PSP files:

The PSP file extension is not found very often and is used by different programs with different formats. The file formats most commonly found in PSP files are:

All other PSP files (45%) have different formats, often, for example, ELF. Sometimes used for photoshop or prefs. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your PSP file!

a psp multi-layer image is a special file format by Corel and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with PSP files

  • Associate the PSP file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open multi-layer images. Because only the current version supports the latest PSP file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Corel manufacturer website after an available PaintShop update.
  • To make sure that your PSP file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .PSP file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
