Opening a PTG File
The PTG file type is primarily associated with Cyclone.
What is a PTG file?
How to open a PTG file
You need a suitable software like Cyclone to open a PTG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PTG file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PTG file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert PTG files:
- Cyclone by Leica Geosystems
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. PTG files are often referred to as Cyclone 3d images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- ArtRage (painting project) by Ambient DesignArtRage is a cross-platform digital painting software that uses relatively realistic physics to simulate actual painting using mediums such as oils, pencils, glitter, acrylic, or spray paint. Paintings created with ArtRage are saved in a PTG project file. This file format is classified as Raster Image.
- PowerTeacher Gradebook (configuration) by PowerSchoolPowerTeacher Gradebook is a web-based, unified classroom management and student progress tracking application. The PTG file used by PowerTeacher Gradebook contains settings such the student ID, session ID, school number, connection credentials etc. This file format is classified as Web (source).
PTG file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the PTG files:
PTG is seldom used as a file extension and is primarily used by a single program. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 70% of all PTG files are Ambient Design ArtRage project files. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. PTG files can be up to 85 MB in size, but are often around 870 KB - 10 MB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. The keywords Ambient Design Project file, ArtRage 2, IHDR, sRGB, pHYs, gAMA and IDATx^ are typical for these files.
- 10% of all PTG files use the same file format, which have the signature powerschool.base=https://. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. PTG files can be up to 1.7 KB in size, but are often around 1.6 KB - 1.7 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: # Change in internationalized installations, base, https, powerschool.port=443, version.key=Version and ## -- You should not normally need to change any values past this. The following filename is common: LaunchGradebook.ptg.
The remaining 20% of all PTG files are different files with different signatures, often e.g. PTG. You can get all the details of your PTG file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .ptg file to analyze" above.

a ptg point clouds and scanworld is a special file format by Leica Geosystems and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with PTG files
- Associate the PTG file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open point clouds and scanworlds. Because only the current version supports the latest PTG file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Leica Geosystems manufacturer website after an available Cyclone update.
- To make sure that your PTG file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PTG file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
