Opening a PVM File

The PVM file type is primarily associated with Parallels Desktop.

PVMFile Extension PVM
File extension: PVM
File type:  virtual machine module

What is a PVM file?

PVM files mostly belong to Parallels Desktop by Parallels. A PVM file contains a virtual machine created and used by Parallels Desktop hardware virtualization software. The file contains a virtualized hardware and operating system. Another type of PVM file stores information about the grid size and bit depth of a volumetric dataset. The Versatile Volume Viewer (V^3) program developed by Stefan Roettger can render volumetric data such as MRI or CT scans saved in PVM files.

How can I open a PVM file?

You need a suitable software like Parallels Desktop to open a PVM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PVM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PVM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert PVM files:

  1. Parallels Desktop by Parallels
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. PVM files are often referred to as Parallels Desktop disk images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. OSTA Player (music/video data) by OSTA
MPV Player is a discontinued multimedia application for PC users. It can open and play a PVM file containing information about a collection of music, videos, and photos. This file format is classified as Simple text file.
  3. Sonic Adventure DX (game object) by Sega
Sonic Adventure DX is a discontinued video game for console and PC users. It saves game objects in PVM files. This file format is classified as Game.
  4. Versatile Volume Viewer (volumetric dataset) by Stefan Roettger
Versatile Volume Viewer is a free program for viewing volumetric datasets saved in PVM format. The file contains information about the grid size and bit depth of a volumetric dataset. This file format is classified as Simple text file.

PVM file format:

If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the PVM files is as follows:

PVM is not a common file extension and mainly uses a defined PVM format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

All other PVM files (20%) have no uniform format, frequently e.g. Differential Data Stream Volume format and PWK Virtual machine module. If you want to find out what your PVM file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

a pvm virtual machine module is a special file format by Parallels and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with PVM files

  • Associate the PVM file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open virtual machine modules. Because only the current version supports the latest PVM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Parallels manufacturer website after an available Parallels Desktop update.
  • To make sure that your PVM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .PVM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
