What is a PVM file?

PVM files mostly belong to Parallels Desktop by Parallels. A PVM file contains a virtual machine created and used by Parallels Desktop hardware virtualization software. The file contains a virtualized hardware and operating system. Another type of PVM file stores information about the grid size and bit depth of a volumetric dataset. The Versatile Volume Viewer (V^3) program developed by Stefan Roettger can render volumetric data such as MRI or CT scans saved in PVM files.

How can I open a PVM file?

You need a suitable software like Parallels Desktop to open a PVM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. PVM file format:

If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Some examples of file names are Camera_2020-06-01.pvm or Scans_2020-06-01.pvm. Files like these are about opendvd and album.
• 15% of all PVM files start with the bytes 02 00 00 00 crucial for this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are on average 3 KB in size and range from 1 KB to 3 KB.
