What is a PYO file

PYO files mostly belong to Python by Python Software Foundation. A PYO file contains Python bytecode compiled from PY modules to speed up application startup time. Python interpreter generates an optimized version of a PY module when it is imported into a different script/module and run with the optimization settings enabled in the interpreter. This is achieved by passing the -O flag when invoking Python interpreter. In doing so, the interpreter removes assert statements from the generated bytecode and skips the interpretation/parsing step when running optimized code saved in PYO files. Applications such as The Sims video game use Python modules saved in PYO files.

How do you open PYO files?

You need a suitable software like Python from Python Software Foundation to open a PYO file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To view or edit PYO files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored.
