Opening QFX Files
The QFX file type is primarily associated with Quicken.
What is a QFX file?
- Main Use: Quicken is an individual finance management software that is compatible with Android, iOS, and Windows platforms. It is used in the tracking of account balances, investments, budgeting, and other expenditure. Quicken software uses QFX files to dynamically store account information along with all the associated transactions in a standardized format. The QFX file format is used by the software's Web Connect and Direct Connect features for sending and receiving financial data over the web.
- Additional Information: The QFX file format is a proprietary version of the OFX (Open Financial Exchange) file format. It is a standard OFX file that contains extra fields for supporting licensing fees. Quicken financial software can only import those QFX files of those institutions that have paid the license fee.

QFX format details:
To view or edit QFX files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our examination of the QFX files comes to the following conclusion:
The QFX file extension mainly uses a defined QFX format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 90% of all QFX files have the same signature OFXHEADER:. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The average file size is 6 KB with most files being between 1 KB and 41 KB in size. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. The keywords CODE, COMPRESSION:NONE, DATA:OFXSGML, NEWFILEUID:NONE, OFXHEADER:100, OLDFILEUID:NONE, CHARSET:1252, ENCODING:USASCII, VERSION:102, SECURITY:NONE, SEVERITY, INFO, <OFX>, <SIGNONMSGSRSV1>, <SONRS> and <STATUS> are typical for these files. An example of a file name is Checking1.qfx or download.qfx. Files like these are about transactions, quicken, statement, export, savings, credit, trans and card.
- 2% of all QFX files are using the well-known XML file format to store the data. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The files are on average 11 KB in size and range from 1 KB to 30 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: <?xml version="1.0", CODE, INFO, NEWFILEUID, NONE, OFX OFXHEADER, OLDFILEUID, SECURITY, SEVERITY, SIGNONMSGSRSV1, SONRS, STATUS, VERSION, encoding and utf-8. The following filename is common: 2020-06-01_transaction_download.qfx. Such files are related to transaction.
The remaining 8% of all QFX files are different files with different signatures. They are often associated with account, investment, ofxdl, activity, stmt, accountactivity, history, bank or hist. Just click the "Choose your .qfx file to view" button on this page to find out what your QFX file is.
