What is a QSS file?

QSS files mostly belong to QT SDK by The Qt Company. QSS stands for Qt Style Sheet. Qt is an environment for cross-platform software development. It allows designing, developing & deploying graphical user interfaces (GUIs) and applications. Qt is available under both open-source and commercial licences, and is currently developed by The Qt Company. Google Earth and VLC media player have been developed using Qt. The QSS file stores a style sheet that customizes the appearance of a GUI created in Qt. It is similar to the CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) files used to format web pages. QSS files are used to modify the appearance of user interface elements and to control things such as colors, fonts, borders, and mouse-hover behaviors in the interface. They contain a sequence of style rules. Each style rule consists of a selector and a declaration. The selector specifies which Qt widgets are modified by the rule, and the declaration determines the properties for the widget. A Qt Style Sheet may be applied to a specific widget or to an entire application. QSS files are simple text files and can be created, opened and edited in any text editor.

How to open QSS files

You need a suitable software like QT SDK to open a QSS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your QSS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a QSS file directly in the browser:. QSS file format:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. • 45% of all QSS files are using the well-known Source file format to store the data. A source code is the set of instructions written by a programmer using a computer programming language like JavaScript, C++ or Basic. This code is translated into machine language by a compiler. The translated result is called app, program or executable. These files contain text and words, not binary data. The files are often between 2 KB and 25 KB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The files contain the following words: this, Copyright and License. QDarkStyleSheet.qss or py_dracula_dark.qss is a typical file name. Files like these are about dark, style, dracula, sheet, qdark and stylesheet.
• 15% of all QSS files internally use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Composite Document File format or OLE2 compound document format. This file format is used by previous Microsoft Office programs and other Windows programs and stores the data in complex containers and sections. Compound files begin always with signature bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 (ÐÏࡱá). There is also a unique Windows component object identifier (CLSID) which is a3f45240-df54-11d1-8bb1-006097be65cc. The data in this file is stored in streams whose names are ItemData and QueueData. QSS files can be up to 53 KB in size, but are often around 6 KB - 34 KB.
