Opening an RVT File
The RVT file type is primarily associated with Revit.
What is an RVT file?
Structure: An RVT includes all of the geometry and non-geometrical data for a given project, including the 3D structures and buildings modeled, 2D drafting annotation information, building metadata, etc. Object data included inside the project is grouped into three distinct groups:
- "System Families" - e.g. walls, floors, roofs, ceilings, etc.
- "Loadable Families" - objects built out of primitives separately from the main project
- "In-Place Families" - objects built-in within the project.
Related file types: Using Revit, it is possible to convert RVT files to other file types by using the "Export" function. Other file types which are supported include DWG and DXF.
Operating systems: Out of the more popular operating systems, Revit only supports Windows.
How can I open an RVT file?
You need a suitable software like Revit to open an RVT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RVT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RVT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert RVT files:
- Revit by Autodesk
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. RVT files are often referred to as Revit raster images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- AutoCAD (project file) by AutodeskAutoCAD is a computer-aided design and drafting software solution developed and published by Autodesk for architects, project managers, engineers, graphic designers, city planners, etc. RVT file stores project settings and 3D building design - sections, floor plans, elevations, and other data used for 3D rendering. This file format is classified as Raster Image. Related links: Tutorials, Support, AutoCAD on Wikipedia, Guide
- Incite Media Asset Management (assistant data file) by IMCIMC Incite Media Asset Management was a software tool developed for handling ingest, metadata, logging, searching, viewing, and transcoding of media assets on anything from a single system to a network environment. It was intended for broadcasters and video content producers. The RVT file contains assistant data. Incite Media Asset Management and its RVT file type are obsolete and no longer supported. This file format is classified as Data. Related links: Info Page
- Rivet (template file) by ApacheApache Rivet is a powerful, flexible, consistent, fast, and robust system designed for developing web applications using the help of the Tool Command Language (Tcl) and Apache HTTP Server. The RVT file is a template file. This file format is classified as Developer. Related links: Manuals, Rivet Tcl on GitHub, Contact
- VersaPro (reference view table file) by General ElectricVersaPro was programming software for the Windows platform developed by General Electric for programming logic controllers. The RVT file stored a reference view table. This software and this RVT file type are obsolete and no longer supported. This file format is classified as Data. - Workforce Management (report file) by NICENICE Workforce Management is a cloud-based comprehensive management suite developed for optimizing the performance of a contact center. It uses embedded artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to provide users with the ability to identify patterns, develop accurate forecasts, and generate various reports. The RVT file is a report file. This file format is classified as Data. Related links: Brochure, Support, NICE on Wikipedia
RVT file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below is our analysis of the RVT files:
The RVT file extension is used very often and mainly uses a defined RVT format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 97% of all RVT files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, known also as OLE2 Compound Document format or Composite Document File format. Microsoft Compound File is a complex container format used by some versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows-centric applications. It has features similar to those of a filesystem format. Compound files begin always with signature bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 (ÐÏࡱá). Sections and streams in the file are named Formats, Partitions, BasicFileInfo, Contents, Global, TransmissionData, ProjectInformation and RevitPreview. The average file size is 42 MB with most files being between 5 MB and 200 MB in size. The file type is relatively new. Files like these are sometimes connected to model, arch, project, revit, central, detached, building and hotel.
The remaining 3% of all RVT files are different files with different signatures. Tagged as structural, office, abhur, sample, bldg or hisa. If you want to find out which format your RVT file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .rvt file to analyze".
Technical Data for RVT File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.
EXEFile: %ProgramFiles%\AUTODE~1.1\Program\Revit.exe
EXEFile: %ProgramFiles%\AUTODE~1\Program\Revit.exe
an rvt project file is a special file format by Autodesk and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with RVT files
- Associate the RVT file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open project files. Because only the current version supports the latest RVT file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Autodesk manufacturer website after an available Revit update.
- To make sure that your RVT file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .RVT file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
