Opening SCO Files
The SCO file type is primarily associated with Sibelius.
What is an SCO file?
How to open an SCO file
You need a suitable software like Sibelius to open an SCO file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SCO file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SCO file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

SCO file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the SCO files looks like this:
SCO is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type includes various formats for various programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 30% of all SCO files start with the bytes 3ýÿÿ crucial for this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. SCO files can be up to 750 KB in size, but are often around 7 KB - 330 KB. The file type is old but is used even today. The following filename is common: scn_castle_1_exterior.sco. Such SCO files store data about town, castle, exterior, scene, village, arena, center, zendar and store.
- 10% of all SCO files start with the bytes [ObjectBegin] crucial for this file format. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The average file size is 30 KB with most files being between 12 KB and 110 KB in size. The files contain the following words: CentralPoint, Name, Verts, [ObjectBegin] and Mega. These files are often associated with mega, trailer and body.
All other SCO files (60%) have no consistent format, often, for example, Csound Score, scr and groups. They are often associated with data or sysc. You can get all the details of your SCO file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .sco file to analyze" above.

- To make sure that your SCO file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
