Opening an SHA File

The SHA file type is primarily associated with 7-Zip.

File extension: SHA
File type:  checksum file

What is an SHA file?

SHA files mostly belong to 7-Zip. A SHA file can serve several purposes depending on the context in which it was created.
In many cases, a SHA file contains a cryptographic hash generated by a Secure Hash Algorithm. Such checksum files hold a string of hexadecimal numbers which you can compare against a newly computed hash to ensure that the file you received has not been altered.
Some SHA files use a Microsoft Compound structure to embed drawing data. These files may represent a SmartSketch drawing that works much like a Visio or SmartDraw file and are managed by specialized design software (Hexagon).
Other variants use XML formatting to store dynamic shape data for industrial systems; for example, they hold Honeywell shapefiles used in HMI applications (Honeywell).
There are also cases where SHA files hold shader information for video games, as seen in titles like Age of Pirates 2: City of Abandoned Ships.
FilExt.com notes: When opening a SHA file, first inspect it with a text editor. If you see a series of hex digits, it is likely a checksum file meant for verifying file integrity. If the content appears binary or formatted for a particular application, use the software that created it or one that specifically supports that format.

How can I open an SHA file?

You need a suitable software like 7-Zip to open an SHA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SHA file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SHA file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert SHA files:

  1. 7-Zip
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SHA files are often referred to as 7-Zip encodeds because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. CorelDRAW (Shader) by Corel
Object properties that make them look real. Properties such as color, reflectivity, transparency, and so on can be applied to an object using shaders.
  3. Systems Management Server (SMS) (Site Hierarchy Addition) by Microsoft Corporation
With SMS you can provide your organization a change and configuration management solution to deliver relevant software and updates to users of Microsoft and third-party applications.
  4. Unix SHAR

SHA file format details:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the SHA files:

The SHA extension is very commonly found and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in SHA files:

The remaining 67% of all SHA files are files with no common format, often, for example, shar SHell self-extracting aRchive, ZIP, bca and block. The category is adobe, master, photoshop, collection, multilingual or illustrator. If you want to find out what your SHA file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

an sha checksum file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with SHA files

  • Associate the SHA file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open checksum files. Because only the current version supports the latest SHA file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available 7-Zip update.
  • To make sure that your SHA file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .SHA file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
