What is a SITEMAP file?

SITEMAP files mostly belong to ASP.NET by Microsoft. A SITEMAP (Web.sitemap) file is an XML-encoded document which contains the hierarchy and structure of a ASP.NET website. The SITEMAP file is saved in the application's root directory and picked up by the site-map provider in ASP.NET. The sitemap of a website with a Home, Services, and About page may look as follows:

<siteMap>
<siteMapNode title="Home" description="Home Page" url="~/default.aspx">
<siteMapNode title="Services" description="Our services"
url="~/Services.aspx">
<siteMapNode title="Web Development" description="Easily managed websites"
url="~/WebDevelopment.aspx" />
<siteMapNode title="Digital Marketing" description="SEO, SMM, SEM, and more"
url="~/DigitalMarketing.aspx" />
</siteMapNode>
<siteMapNode title="About" description="About Us"
url="~/About.aspx">
</siteMapNode>
</siteMap>

How to open SITEMAP files

You need a suitable software like ASP.NET to open a SITEMAP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SITEMAP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SITEMAP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.
