Opening a SOS File
The SOS file type is primarily associated with ArcGIS Pro.
What is a SOS file
Geospatial Data: These files store Norwegian mapping information using the SOSI standard. They can include coordinate details, spatial features, and attribute data. Specialized GIS software, such as ArcGIS Pro or FME Desktop, is used to open and view these files.
Science On a Sphere Playlist: In another use, SOS files define playlists for spherical display systems. They control data sequences and image transitions for Science On a Sphere setups, like those maintained by NOAA (Science On a Sphere).
- Geospatial Role: Implements the Norwegian SOSI format for mapping and survey data.
- Playlist Role: Organizes media sequences for globe visualizations.
FilExt.com tip: Each version is tailored to its system. Opening them correctly requires using the right software.

SOS file extension format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below you will find our evaluation of the SOS files:
The SOS file ending is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The file formats most commonly found in SOS files are:
- 65% of all SOS files are associated with SOSI map data. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The files are 1 KB to 2 MB in size, with a median of 54 KB. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. The keywords ...ORIGO-N, ..TRANSPAR, .HODE, ..OMR, ...MIN-N, ..SOSI-NIV, ...MAX-N, ...ENHET 0.01, ...KOORDSYS 22, ...VERT-DATUM NN2000, ..TEGNSETT ISO8859-10 and ..SOSI-VERSJON 4.5 are typical for these files. Files like these are about sosi, grunnkart, asbuilt, innm, plan, grenser, teknisk, matrikkeldata, maritime, bygning, norges, urnes and kart.
- 10% of all SOS files are SOSI map data files, which are based on the UTF-8 file format. UTF-8 is the World Wide Web's most common character encoding for Unicode. UTF-8 files can be viewed with any text editor. These files start with the 3 bytes (hex: EF BB BF), the so called byte order mark (BOM). If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The files are often between 22 KB and 19 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as ...MIN-N, ..OMR, ..TEGNSETT UTF-8, ..TRANSPAR, .HODE, ...MAX-N, ...ORIGO-N, ..SOSI-NIV, ...ENHET 0.01, ...KOORDSYS 23, EIER, SOSI-VERSJON 4 and ...KOORDSYS 22. These files can be linked to basisdata and berggrunnn.
All other SOS files (25%) have different formats, such as config. Often described as playlist, custom, stedsnavn, adresser, kartdata, sithoyde, regplan, anlegg, elveg, norge or land. If you want to find out what your SOS file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
