All about SPP Files
The SPP file type is primarily associated with Substance.
What is an SPP file?
How to open SPP files
You need a suitable software like Substance to open an SPP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SPP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SPP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert SPP files:
- Substance by Adobe
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SPP files are often referred to as Substance 3d images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- IRM (sealed presentation) by OracleIRM, short for Information Rights Management was a program that allowed users to encrypt (seal) and decrypt documents. This program was previously known as E-DRM (or SealedMedia) and it saved sealed (encrypted) PowerPoint presentations in SPP files. IRM appears to have been discontinued. This file format is classified as Encoded.
- NMS-Edit (project) by ITINMS-Edit is a word processor for creating and editing construction specifications. Projects created with NMS-Edit are stored in SPP files. This file format is classified as Data.
- PhotoPlus (layered image) by SerifPhotoPlus is a discontinued professional photo editing software. SPP was its native file format for storing photo editing projects (made up of layers, effects, images, metadata etc.). This file format is classified as Raster Image.
- Scrapbook Factory (data) by NovaScrapbook Factory is a graphics design software for creating digital scrapbooks that users may choose to print. It features over 75,000 templates and many creative fonts, effects, and graphics components that allow for quick and easy scrapbook creation. Some data used by this program is stored in SPP files. This file format is classified as Data.
- Sprint (printer data) by Micro FocusSprint is an obsolete software used to perform word processing tasks on classic MS-DOS platforms. Files sent from Sprint to a printer were stored in SPP files. This file format is classified as Data.
- SPSS Statistics (production mode output) by IBMSPSS Statistics is a data mining and analysis software for interactive, batch, or statistical analysis. It provides tools that allow you to understand and present results with tabular and graphical output over various channels. The production mode output data created by SPSS Statistics is stored in SPP files. This file format is classified as Data.
- XMLSpy (virtual project) by AltovaXMLSpy is an integrated development environment for creating and editing XSLT documents. Virtual projects used to organize XML, CSS, and XSLT-type templates in XMLSpy are stored in SPP files. This file format is classified as Developer.
SPP file format details:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the SPP files is as follows:
An SPP file includes different formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 30% of all SPP files are based on the popular HDF5 file format. HDF5 is short for Hierarchical Data Format version 5. It is an open source file format for storing and organizing large amounts of data. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are 37 MB to 1 GB in size, with a median of 200 MB. The file type is relatively new. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. TREE. These files are often associated with texture, substance, textures, uploads, template and hobkin.
- 25% of all SPP files are based on the zip format, multiple files are compressed and combined into one SPP file. The average file count is 9 with most SPP files containing between 7 - 15 compressed files. File names inside are Root.xml, document.xml, flattened.png, preview.jpg, story.xml, stylesheet.xml, \Layer\1.xml and \images\1.png. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. SPP files are between 100 KB and 36 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. IDATx, IHDR, images/00000000.png and pHYs. A usual file name is SAMPLE_PACK.spp. Files like these are sometimes connected to sample, pack, image, christmas, activity and chuga.
The remaining 45% of all SPP files are files with no common format, often, for example, Serif PhotoPlus Picture, XML and spp. They are often associated with invoice, project, aufgabe, billing, effect or family. Just click the "Choose your .spp file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your SPP file is.

an spp textures, meshes, and 3D model configuration is a special file format by Adobe and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with SPP files
- Associate the SPP file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open textures, meshes, and 3d model configurations. Because only the current version supports the latest SPP file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Adobe manufacturer website after an available Substance update.
- To make sure that your SPP file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .SPP file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
