What is an SSA file?

SSA files mostly belong to Subtitle Workshop by URUWorks. An SSA file is a video subtitle saved in SubStation Alpha format. Unlike SRT and other subtitle formats, SSA supports advanced features such as font size, formatting, borders, alignment, margins, and transparency. Each block of text to be displayed over a given duration of a related video clip contains the formatting (Format) of the block and the actual text (Dialogue). The Format section of a block of text defines the layer, start, end, name of character, effects, and margin, while the Dialogue section defines the start-stop timestamps, position, and the actual text of the dialogue.

How do you open SSA files?

You need a suitable software like Subtitle Workshop to open an SSA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
