What is an SWC file?

SWC files mostly belong to Snes9x by Snes9x Team. An SWC file is a disk image cloned from a SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) video game cartridge. Such a disk image is created with Super Wild Card backup unit. Video games saved in SWC disk images can be loaded and played using emulators such as Snes9x and OpenEmu. SWC is also the filename extension of a component distribution archive containing ActionScript files, icons, and data for creating multimedia content on Flash (previously ShockWave) compatible platforms. Flash Player can open this file. Another type of SWC file is a Spanish audio conversation distributed as part of Spanish Whiz e-learning software.

How to open an SWC file

You need a suitable software like Snes9x to open an SWC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To find out what program is needed to open SWC files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the SWC files produces the following result:

Files with the SWC extension are quite widely used. This file type is used by different programs with different formats. But the following two file formats are common:

• 50% of all SWC files use the ZIP algorithm, i.e. an SWC file contains several compressed files. An SWC file can contain up to 50 files (mostly 2 - 9). File names inside are catalog.xml and library.swf. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. SWC files are between 23 KB and 810 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as library.swf and catalog. A usual file name is playerglobal32_0.swc. • 15% of all SWC files are based on the popular Flash file format. A ShockWave Flash file contains an outdated Macromedia/Adobe Flash Player compressed movie. Adobe strongly recommends all users immediately uninstall the Flash Player to help protect their systems. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. SWC files can be up to 300 MB in size, but are often around 36 KB - 74 MB. A common filename is assets.swc.
