What is an SXD file?

SXD files mostly belong to LibreOffice Draw. An SXD file may be used in different contexts depending on its origin.
  • Drawing File: It is most often an OpenDocument drawing file created by LibreOffice Draw or OpenOffice Draw. The file uses a ZIP container to store vector graphics, shapes, text, and page layout details. Use LibreOffice to open and edit these files.
  • GIS Document: In other cases, an SXD file is an ArcGIS Spatial Document that holds geospatial layouts and map design data. It may use a Microsoft Compound format. For this type, open the file with ArcGIS Pro or ArcScene; more details can be found at ESRI ArcGIS Pro.
  • Configuration File: Less commonly, the same extension is used for a SaverXware setup file that saves software configuration settings. Visit OnsetComp for additional information.
  • FilExt.com tip: Identify the file’s origin to select the correct application for viewing or editing it.

How can I open an SXD file?

You need a suitable software like LibreOffice Draw to open an SXD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SXD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SXD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below you will find our evaluation of the SXD files:

    • To make sure that your SXD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
