What is a VHDX file?

VHDX files mostly belong to Hyper-V by Microsoft. A VHDX file is a disk image saved in the Virtual Hard Disk V2 (colloquially called Virtual Hard Disk Extended) format developed by Microsoft. It contains one or more partitions representing the hard disk partition(s) of virtual machines created with Hyper-V or VirtualBox system virtualization software. VHDX format was developed as the successor of VHD format. Unlike VHD format which is limited to 2040 Gigabytes capacity, the maximum capacity of a VHDX file is 64 Terabytes. VHDX format also provides improved data safeguards in case of power failure.

How to open VHDX files

You need a suitable software like Hyper-V to open a VHDX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VHDX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VHDX file directly in the browser:.
