Opening a VMX File
The VMX file type is primarily associated with VMware Workstation Player.
What is a VMX file?
How to open VMX files
You need a suitable software like VMware Workstation Player to open a VMX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VMX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VMX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

VMX file extension format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the VMX files:
The VMX file extension is not common and mainly uses a special format. The file formats most commonly found in VMX files are:
- 80% of all VMX files are VMware configuration files. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. A typical file size is 3 KB. The file type is relatively new. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. config.version = "8", virtualHW, .encoding = "windows-1252", memsize, pciBridge0.present = "TRUE", pciBridge4.present = "TRUE", scsi0.present = "TRUE" and pciBridge4.virtualDev = "pcieRootPort". These files can be linked to kali, vmware, linux, windows, mercedes, macos, virtual and professional.
- 5% of all VMX files belong to VMware configuration. The files are using the common file format shell script. A shell script is a text file that contains shell commands for a UNIX-based operating system. The first line of such a text file is often #!/usr/bin/env or #!/bin/sh. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The file size is in the range of 940 bytes to 2 KB.
All the rest of the VMX files (15%) have different formats. Tagged as centos. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your VMX file!

a vmx virtual machine configuration is a special file format by Vmware and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with VMX files
- Associate the VMX file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open virtual machine configurations. Because only the current version supports the latest VMX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Vmware manufacturer website after an available VMware Workstation Player update.
- To make sure that your VMX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .VMX file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
