What is a VTF file?

VTF files mostly belong to 3DESIGN by Gravotech. A VTF file is a 3D jewelry model created with 3DEGISN computer-aided design program. Jewelry models stored in a VTF file comprise surface data, geometry, textures, and information that allows users to view said design from different angles. Another type of VTF file is a texture used in Valve video games such as those in the Half-Life series. This texture file is created from a TGA image using the Valve Texture Tool (Vtex) in Source SDK. VTF is also the filename extension of a data file saved in 7Z archive compression format.

How to open a VTF file

You need a suitable software like 3DESIGN to open a VTF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VTF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VTF file directly in the browser:. Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our analysis of the VTF files produces the following result:

VTF is a very widely used file extension. The file type is mainly used by one program with a specific format. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 96% of all VTF files are Valve Texture Format files. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are often between 43 KB and 1 MB in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Such VTF files store data about spray, body, background, normal, color, head, fort and icon.
• 1% of all VTF files use the same file format, which have the signature #VIA_TRAFFIC_FILE#. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are 12 KB to 4 MB in size, with a median of 860 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: #VIA_TRAFFIC_FILE#, FMT_SISVARIO and FMT_VIASIS_3003.
