What is a WDP file?

WDP files mostly belong to Image Composite Editor by Microsoft. WDP filename extension is associated with high definition images saved in JPEG XR ( JPEG eXtended Range) raster graphics file format. The structure of WDP image files is similar to the structure of TIFF files and the image data is compressed with a lossy/lossless compression standard similar to JPEG. However, in comparison to JPEG, WDP format offers better lossless compression, color accuracy, alpha channel support, and metadata support. Some programs that implement the JPEG XR format for creating WDP images include Photo Viewer, Image Composite Editor, and PaintShop. WDP is also the filename extension of programming projects created with WINDEV integrated development environment for building .NET and JAVA applications. AutoCAD 2D/3D drawing and simulation software saves electrical projects in text-based WDP files. Such an electrical project file contains a list of the full path to interrelated electrical drawing files, the project's folder structure, and the default settings for new drawings.

How to open a WDP file

You need a suitable software like Image Composite Editor to open a WDP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. How to convert a WDP file to JPG, PNG, SVG, PDF, ...

WDP format details:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. The WDP extension is quite commonly used. The file itself predominantly uses a uniform format. But the following two file formats are common:

• 70% of all WDP files are JPEG XR bitmap files. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are on average 76 KB in size and range from 10 KB to 450 KB. The file type is relatively new. The keywords WMPHOTO and cl HH are typical for these files. Some examples of file names are hdphoto1.wdp or hdphoto2.wdp. These files can be linked to data, images, internetexplorer, saved, users, apps, temp, image, hero and logo.
• 9% of all WDP files are based on the popular UTF-8 file format. UTF-8 is the World Wide Web's most common character encoding for Unicode. UTF-8 files can be viewed with any text editor. These files start with the 3 bytes  (hex: EF BB BF), the so called byte order mark (BOM). These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The file size is in the range of 1 KB to 3 KB. The files contain the following words: Libs, autodesk, documents, users, PANEL, acade and public.
