What is a WEB file?

WEB files mostly belong to VLC Media Player. WebM Video and Multi‐Format Content: The WEB extension does not define one single file type. It is used by different programs to hold web-related content in several internal formats. For example:
  • WebM Video File: Many WEB files use the MKV (Matroska) container to store video. These files are played by media applications such as VLC Media Player. This is the most common use.
  • Bookmark or Web Form Data: Some files use a JSON structure to save web bookmarks or Smartsheet web form details.
  • Design Projects: Certain WEB files are created by Xara Web Designer for website layouts. More info is available at Xara.
  • Web Archive/Image Files: A few files are web archives stored in TIFF format and may be associated with WebEx tools (WebEx). Other files pack images as WebP using a RIFF container, viewable in Paint.NET (Paint.NET) or supported browsers.
  • Firmware Updates: Several WEB files are used for TOTOLINK router firmware updates. These require specific firmware update utilities, sometimes using TFTPServer.
  • Compressed Archives: Some work as ZIP archives, such as compressed payroll data linked with Wage Easy Payroll (The Access Group).
  • FilExt.com tip: Because the WEB extension covers multiple usage cases, the file’s internal format (MKV, JSON, TIFF, RIFF, or ZIP) determines how to open it. Check the file header or use the application that created it.

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening.
