Opening a XIF File
The XIF file type is primarily associated with NodeBuilder.
What is a XIF file?
How can I open a XIF file?
You need a suitable software like NodeBuilder to open a XIF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XIF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XIF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert XIF files:
- NodeBuilder by LonMark
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. XIF files are often referred to as NodeBuilder data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- OmniPage (scanned/fax document) by KofaxOmniPage is a cross-platform optical character recognition application. It allows users to convert a scanned document to text. XIF is one of its supported formats. XIF files were created by a discontinued OCR program named Pagis. This file format is classified as Page Layout. Related links: TIFF
- Wang Tiff Viewer (image) by WangWang Tiff Viewer is a discontinued image viewer which was shipped with a discontinued version of Windows operating system. It could open images saved in Extended Image Format (XIF). This file format is classified as Raster Image.
XIF file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below is our analysis of the XIF files:
The XIF file ending predominantly uses a uniform format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 70% of all XIF files belong to eXtended Image File Format bitmap. The files are using the common file format TIFF. TIFF is short for Tagged Image File Format. It stores raster graphics images that support color depths from 1 to 24-bit, lossy and lossless compression and multiple layers and pages. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are often between 40 KB and 1 MB in size. The file type was used 20 years ago. The keywords Author, Copyright, Copyright (C) 1995-1996 Xerox Corporation, All Rights Reserved, Date, Xerox Corp, eXtended and XEROX DIFF are typical for these files. Files like these are about bridge, photograph, assessment, letter, endorsed, capture, forget, about, dont, over and road, and have often person-related content.
- 10% of all XIF files are associated with Text Device Interface File Format. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. The files are often between 1 KB and 11 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. All Rights Reserved, Copyright, generated, File, Rights Reserved, Echelon Corporation, Revision, XIF Version 4 and XIF Version 3.
The remaining 20% of all XIF files are different files with different signatures, the following 5 formats can be found: zlib. Sometimes used for inspection, jacksons, troubled, estate, simple, minds, water, feel or lane. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your XIF file!

a xif device interface is a special file format by LonMark and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with XIF files
- Associate the XIF file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open device interfaces. Because only the current version supports the latest XIF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the LonMark manufacturer website after an available NodeBuilder update.
- To make sure that your XIF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .XIF file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
