What is an XLSB file

XLSB files mostly belong to Excel by Microsoft. An XLSB file is a spreadsheet created with Excel spreadsheet processing software. The format is officially called BIFF12. It is actually a compressed ZIP file containing individual worksheets (data tables), settings, formulae, images, embedded/referenced objects, layout information and metadata saved in binary format. Together, the information in an XLSB file make up the spreadsheet for a report, graph, chart, or even a data entry system. Microsoft introduced XLSB format around the same time as XLSX format which is based on Office Open XML standard. Third-party spreadsheet applications also support XLSX format.

How do you open XLSB files?

You need a suitable software like Excel to open an XLSB file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. How to convert XLSB files to XLS, XLSX, ODS, CSV, TXT, PDF, ...

If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. You will often come across the XLSB file type. This is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 90% of all XLSB files are based on the zip format, i.e. an XLSB file contains several compressed files. The number of files included is on average 36 and ranges from 14 to 160. File names inside are [Content_Types].xml, \_rels\.rels, \docProps\app.xml, \docProps\core.xml, \xl\_rels\workbook.bin.rels, \xl\sharedStrings.bin, \xl\styles.bin and \xl\workbook.bin. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. [Content_Types].xml. These files can be linked to template, report, refund, lesf, electronic, consolidation, data and form.
• 4% of all XLSB files use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Compound document files are used to structure the contents of a document in the file. It is possible to divide the data into several streams, and to store these streams in different places in the file. In this way compound document files support a complete file system inside the file, the streams are like files in a real file system, and the sections are like subdirectories. The file signature of compound files is defined as D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1, so the first character of a file looks like "DOCFILE". These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are often between 28 KB and 6 MB in size. A usual file name is BANK POC -PAN INDIA.xlsb.
