Opening YML Files
The YML file type is primarily associated with Visual Studio Code.
What is a YML file?
How to open YML files
You need a suitable software like Visual Studio Code to open a YML file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your YML file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a YML file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert YML files:
- Visual Studio Code by Microsoft
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. YML files are often referred to as Visual Studio Code developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Atom (application data) by GitHub
- Ruby on Rails (database connection configuration) by Ruby on Rails ProjectRuby on Rails is a full-stack web development framework that follows the model-view-controller architecture. Its database connection string is saved in a YML file. This file format is classified as Developer. Related links: Apache/Ruby Integration Project

YML file format details:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the YML files:
YML is a very common file type and includes very many different file formats. But the following two file formats are common:
- 9% of all YML files start with the bytes name: crucial for this file format. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The files are on average 840 bytes in size and range from 210 bytes to 4 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. name, dependencies, channels and - defaults. Some examples of file names are environment.yml or cvcourse_windows.yml. Such files are related to windows, cvcourse, course, platform, virtual, tfdl, plugin and kleio.
- 7% of all YML files are based on the popular UTF-8 file format. UTF-8 is the World Wide Web's most common character encoding for Unicode. UTF-8 files can be viewed with any text editor. These files start with the 3 bytes (hex: EF BB BF), the so called byte order mark (BOM). These files contain text and words, not binary data. The file size is in the range of 810 bytes to 100 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: l_english. Files like these are about english, countries, musicplayer, gimpro, ideas and music.
The remaining 84% of all YML files are files with no common format, often e.g. YAML serialized data, XML, version, open, language, swagger, categor, theme, brut and sudo. The category is docker, compose, latest, data, template or custom. If you want to find out what your YML file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
Technical Data for YML File Extension
a yml application data is a special file format by Microsoft and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with YML files
- Associate the YML file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open application data files. Because only the current version supports the latest YML file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Visual Studio Code update.
- To make sure that your YML file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .YML file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
