You need a suitable software like Mupen64Plus from Nintendo to open a Z64 file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Z64 file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. The following keywords are characteristic: NSME and SUPER MARIO 64. The following filename is common: Super Mario 64 (U) [!].z64 or Super Mario 64 (USA).z64. Such Z64 files store data about mario, super, party, banjo, zelda, donkey, legend, kong and ootr.
