What is a ZED file?
ZED files mostly belong to Zed!. ZED files have two distinct structures. The primary form uses the Microsoft Compound file format to create an encrypted container. This container holds multiple data streams securely and is linked to the Zed! software.
The encrypted container type stores data in a secure, structured format using proprietary methods. An alternate form is a ZIP-based compressed file known as a ZTE compressed file. This version is used by MyHeritage Family Tree Builder and can be referenced at MyHeritage Family Tree Builder. FilExt.com notes: To open a ZED file, identify its origin. How to open a ZED file
You need a suitable software like Zed! to open a ZED file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To find out what program is needed to open ZED files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. The ZED file extension is quite widespread and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 75% of all ZED files use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Sections and streams in the file have names like 5haaaaqaIekzeecnWj31zxh0Nc and ~zed21E2A62D4315AF4084A81F036AE. The average file size is 940 KB with most files being between 43 KB and 11 MB in size. The file type is a fairly new file format. Some examples of file names are msg.zed. Files like these have the following tags: report, container, conteneur, echange, data, safran, status and homs.
- 20% of all ZED files are based on the zip format, multiple files are compressed and combined into one ZED file. A ZED file includes 1 to 140 files. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. The files are 1 KB to 100 MB in size, with a median of 35 KB. Such files are related to library, manual, user, family, tree and zxun, and have often person-related content.
