Opening ZIP Files
The ZIP file type is primarily associated with WinZip.
What is a ZIP file?
- Compression Method: The ZIP format compresses each file in an archive individually, so it supports the application of a different compression algorithm to each file. ZIP allows a number of compression algorithms, the most common of which is Deflate. It is also possible to include uncompressed files in a ZIP archive.
- File Structure: Each ZIP archive must contain an "end of central directory record" at the end. Files can be added in arbitrary order. Each individual file in the archive must be preceded by its "local file header". It is optional to add a "data descriptor" after each file.
- Encryption: ZIP supports AES encryption (strong) and Zip 2.0 encryption (weak).
- Related File Formats: A ZIPX file is a ZIP archive that uses advanced compression algorithms that are not available for ZIP. WinZip can also create split archives in the ZIP format. The segments of the multi-volume archive have the extensions Z01, Z02, and so on. The last volume has the ZIP extension.
How to open ZIP files
You need a suitable software like WinZip to open a ZIP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ZIP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ZIP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

ZIP file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the ZIP files:
ZIP is a very common file type and contains well-defined data in an established structure that can be read by various programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 96% of all ZIP files use the ZIP algorithm, so several files are compressed and saved in one ZIP file. Primarily 1 to 70 files are included. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. The file size is in the range of 5 KB to 92 MB. Such files sometimes refer to data, master, bundle, takeout, download, backup, archive and evrak.
- 1% of all ZIP files save the data in GZIP file format. Gzip is a compressed archive file format. Gzip (GNU zip) is only capable of compressing a single file. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. ZIP files can be up to 1 GB in size, but are often around 670 bytes - 150 MB. These files are often associated with moodle, course, sicherung, image, sauvegarde and seguridad.
The remaining 3% of all ZIP files are different files with different signatures. These files sometimes refer to process, wetransfer, drive, pack, overview or project. Just click the "Choose your .zip file to view" button on this page to find out what your ZIP file is.

a zip compressed archive file is a special file format by Corel and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with ZIP files
- Associate the ZIP file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open compressed archive files. Because only the current version supports the latest ZIP file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Corel manufacturer website after an available WinZip update.
- To make sure that your ZIP file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ZIP file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
