All about ZIPX Files
The ZIPX file type is primarily associated with WinZip.
What is a ZIPX file?
- Compression Algorithms: WinZip classifies ZIP format as a Legacy compression format that is recommended for maximum compatibility. Alternatively, it describes ZIPX as the Best method option, which is recommended for smallest size (highest compression ratio). As compared to ZIP, which provides support for the Deflate compression algorithm, ZIPX supports the following advanced algorithms:
-
- BZip
- LZMA
- PPMd
- XZ
- Zstd
- Best method compression: In addition to selecting a compression algorithm manually, WinZip provides the option to let the application choose the best algorithm for each file in a ZIPX archive. This is why ZIPX is called the Best method option.
- Encryption: ZIPX supports AES encryption (strong) and Zip 2.0 encryption (weak).
- Related File Formats: WinZip can also create split archives in the ZIPX format. The segments of the multi-volume archive have the extensions ZX01, ZX02, and so on. The last volume has the ZIPX extension.

ZIPX format details:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below you will find our evaluation of the ZIPX files:
ZIPX is not a common file extension and is primarily used by a single program. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 85% of all ZIPX files use ZIP compression, so multiple files are compressed and stored together in one ZIPX file. Primarily 1 to 90 files are included. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. The files are on average 4 MB in size and range from 69 KB to 37 MB. The file name preview-test-zipx.zipx is typical for these files. Files like these are about autodesk, civilmdc, password, xforcekeygen, preview, universal and data.
All other ZIPX files (15%) have different formats. You can get all the details of your ZIPX file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .zipx file to view" above.

How to solve problems with ZIPX files
- Associate the ZIPX file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open compressed archive files. Because only the current version supports the latest ZIPX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Corel manufacturer website after an available WinZip update.
