What is a ZIPX file?

ZIPX files mostly belong to WinZip by Corel. ZIPX is the newer compressed archive format for WinZip, a file compression and archiving software from Corel. The format was released in 2008. As compared to ZIP, which is the default format for WinZip, ZIPX provides a much higher compression ratio. Like ZIP, ZIPX supports lossless data compression, encryption, and archiving. The difference is that ZIPX allows the use of advanced compression algorithms.

Compression Algorithms: WinZip classifies ZIP format as a Legacy compression format that is recommended for maximum compatibility. Alternatively, it describes ZIPX as the Best method option, which is recommended for smallest size (highest compression ratio). As compared to ZIP, which provides support for the Deflate compression algorithm, ZIPX supports the following advanced algorithms:
- BZip
- LZMA
- PPMd
- XZ
- Zstd
Best method compression: In addition to selecting a compression algorithm manually, WinZip provides the option to let the application choose the best algorithm for each file in a ZIPX archive. This is why ZIPX is called the Best method option.
Encryption: ZIPX supports AES encryption (strong) and Zip 2.0 encryption (weak).
Related File Formats: WinZip can also create split archives in the ZIPX format. The segments of the multi-volume archive have the extensions ZX01, ZX02, and so on. The last volume has the ZIPX extension.

How to open ZIPX files

You need a suitable software like WinZip to open a ZIPX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ZIPX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ZIPX file directly in the browser:.
