What to Do When a .2DC File Fails to Open

Because .2DC files can originate from different programs, they aren't universally openable.

1. Identify the Source: If received from a timber construction engineer or architect, it is likely a Cadwork 2D Catalog file.
2. Check the Header: Inspect the first bytes in a text editor or hex viewer:
   • "PK" indicates a zipped archive.
   • Readable XML/JSON suggests a structured text format.
   • Unreadable binary data points to proprietary CAD formats.

To view or edit 2DC files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. The 2DC file extension is not common and includes different formats for the applicable programs. But the following two file formats are common:

• 30% of all 2DC files are Cadwork 2D Catalog files. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are on average 150 KB in size and range from 7 KB to 1 MB. The files contain the following words: IHDR, bKGD, pHYs and IDATx. Such files sometimes refer to teilgewinde and vollgewinde.
• 25% of all 2DC files use the ZIP algorithm, so several files are compressed and saved in one 2DC file. Such a ZIP file contains 5 to 9 files with names like CONTENT_2D.BIN, CONTENT_2D.FDB, PNG1.PNG, \MultiLayerWalls\MultiLayerWallsBD.xml, \MultiLayerWalls\multiLayerWallsBD.xml, \MultiLayerWalls\multiLayersWallsBD.xml and \Variants\. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. The files are often between 980 KB and 1 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as CONTENT_2D.BIN. Such 2DC files store data about layout, logo and cadwork.
