What is an ADIF file?

ADIF files mostly belong to HAM-LOG by Arthur Schwarz DJ6LS. ADIF stands for Amateur Data Interchange Format and has been in effect since 1996. Since then, ADIF files are standardly used to store log entry information from man amateur radio applications.

• Usage: ADIF files are utilized in Amateur Radio Service to aid home radio fanatics in broadcasting and receiving information. ADIF file formats contain information saved in plain text for exchanging logs among various ham radio logging software. These files have three different specifications. With the introduction of the third upgrade on the ADIF format around 2010, a new file format called ADX came into the picture. It retained all the characteristics of the old ADIF format (which has since been renamed as ADI file) along with support for international data types using Unicode encoded with UTF-8. Each of these three specifications can use ADI files but the ADX files (containing data in XML format) are supported by software complying with the third ADIF specification only.
• Adoption: Ham-Log is one free software capable of handling ADIF files on Microsoft Windows computers. WriteLog is another such application that comes with a free trial.

How to open an ADIF file

1. Identify the Source: If received from an amateur radio operator or contest submission, it is likely an Amateur Data Interchange Format radio log.
2. Check the Header: Open the file in a text editor to inspect the opening lines.
   • Readable text with <eoh> tags indicates a standard ham radio log.
   • Magic bytes like "PK" suggest a zipped archive instead.
3. Use the Original Software: The original program is usually required. Try importing it into HAM-LOG (by Arthur Schwarz DJ6LS), Log4OM, or N1MM Logger, or ask the sender.
