All about ADJ Files
The ADJ file type is primarily associated with LibreOffice Writer.
What is an ADJ file?
For example, one form is an OpenDocument Text File stored in a ZIP container. This version is produced by LibreOffice Writer and contains XML markup along with text content even though it uses a non‐standard extension.
Another common use is as an adjacency matrix file. In this case, the file holds a matrix representation of relationships or connections. Software such as Pajek and Fragstats use these files to analyze networks or graph structures.
A further interpretation comes from the lexicon field, where the file contains adjective data as part of the WordNet database. This file type holds lists of adjectives together with information on their relationships and is used in natural language processing. You can find more about this at WordNet.
If you have a ADJ file, check its origin to determine the right tool for opening it.
How to open ADJ files
You need a suitable software like LibreOffice Writer to open an ADJ file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ADJ file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ADJ file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

ADJ file format details:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the ADJ files is as follows:
The ADJ file ending includes very many different file formats. The following file formats are most commonly found in ADJ files:
- 15% of all ADJ files internally use the ZIP format, that is, an ADJ file includes multiple compressed files. 12 to 22 compressed files with names like [Content_Types].xml, \_rels\.rels, \docProps\app.xml, \docProps\core.xml, \word\_rels\document.xml.rels, \word\document.xml, \word\fontTable.xml, \word\settings.xml, \word\styles.xml and \word\webSettings.xml are common. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. ADJ files are between 15 KB and 320 KB in size. The files contain the following words: [Content_Types].xml. The following filename is common: documento.adj.
- 6% of all ADJ files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "C:\" at the beginning. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The file size is in the range of 120 bytes to 5 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: Class ID, Users, background, tif and Desktop.
All other ADJ files (79%) have no consistent format, the following 8 formats can be found: UTF-8, DOC, This and AATF. They are often associated with settlement, adjustment, statement, network, matrix or pairs. If you want to find out which format your ADJ file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .adj file to analyze".
