What is an AF file?

AF files mostly belong to CryENGINE. An AF file can store different kinds of data. In its primary use, it is an animation file used by game engines such as CryENGINE to hold keyframe and skeletal data for real‐time object movements.
Additional uses include:

Game Animation: The file may contain animation sequences seen in titles like Alien Swarm Reactive Drop. Visit the CryENGINE website for more information.

GIS and Font Data: Some AF files are labeled as RQAF data files and may be used as ArcGIS font files in mapping applications.

How to open an AF file

You need a suitable software like CryENGINE to open an AF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the AF files:

The AF file extension is quite common and is primarily used by a single program. The file formats most commonly found in AF files are:

• 70% of all AF files belong to Affinity document. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are 54 KB to 32 MB in size, with a median of 2 MB. This file type is new and state-of-the-art. The files contain the following words: #Fil(, nsrP#Inf and Prot. Such files are related to logo, template, design, poster, card, banner, vector and black.
• 2% of all AF files start with the magic bytes 08 00 00 00 56 65 72 73 69 6F 6E, which are always the first bytes of this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are on average 4 KB in size and range from 1 KB to 11 KB. The keywords Color, Icon, IntProperty, Version, CompressedSize, ItemName, NameProperty and LargeWoodGear are typical for these files.

All other AF files (28%) have different formats, such as GZIP, ZIP, RQAF, ascii, DEMO and Mesh. These files are often connected to backup, lesson, logotipo, surfaces, startup, camera, export, mockup, models, tshirt, brand, front, label, photo, white or page.
