What is an AFD file?

AFD files mostly belong to AutoForm R8. Your AFD file may represent data from one of two specialized processes.
In many cases, it is an AutoForm simulation result file produced by AutoForm R8. This file stores simulation data from metal forming operations. The content includes parameters such as stress, strain, and process conditions that are essential in evaluating the simulations.
Alternatively, AFD files can serve as torque measurement data files. They record torque vs. angle information used to analyze mechanical performance.

How can I open an AFD file?

You need a suitable software like AutoForm R8 to open an AFD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. • 45% of all AFD files start with the bytes AutoForm‰AF+ , which are crucial for this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. AFD files are between 26 MB and 210 MB in size. The file type is relatively new. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. AutoForm. Such files are related to simulation, body and input.
• 20% of all AFD files start with the magic bytes Angle phi in deg Torque M, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The files are on average 2 KB in size and range from 870 bytes to 2 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: Angle phi in deg and Torque M. A common filename is AL1_BR.AFD.
