Opening AM2 Files
The AM2 file type is primarily associated with Autodesk Netfabb.
What is an AM2 file?
AM2 files exist in different variants that serve distinct roles.
Primary Variant: AutoFab Material Data file
This type of file holds material data for additive manufacturing. It helps define 3D printing material parameters and is linked with the Additive Manufacturing File Format. For more details, you can visit Autodesk Netfabb.
- Material Data: Stores specifications for 3D printing materials.
- Archived Data: Some AM2 files use the ZIP format to compress Mercure data for legal archives.
- Project Files: Others are used by AutoPlay Menu Studio to save project settings.
FilExt.com tip: The file you have may belong to any of these groups. Check the internal structure or header to decide which software is needed for proper viewing or editing.
How to open AM2 files
You need a suitable software like Autodesk Netfabb to open an AM2 file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your AM2 file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a AM2 file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

AM2 file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the AM2 files comes to the following conclusion:
AM2 is not a common file extension and does not have a uniform file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 20% of all AM2 files are based on the zip format, so multiple files are compressed and stored together in one AM2 file. 3 to 24 compressed files with names like archive_envelope.xml and mercure_archive1.xml are common. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. AM2 files are between 140 KB and 4 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as archive and mercure. Such files sometimes refer to procedure, travail, espace and dossier.
- 10% of all AM2 files start with the magic bytes AUTOFAB_MATERIAL02., which are always the first bytes of this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are often between 110 KB and 140 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Q@ToX and AUTOFAB_MATERIAL02.10. A usual file name is CoCr Strategy_ for massive_solid_ metal works_20.am2. Files like these are about strategy, cocr, massive, metal, solid and works.
All other AM2 files (70%) have no consistent format. You can get all the details of your AM2 file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .am2 file to analyze" above.

How to solve problems with AM2 files
- Associate the AM2 file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest AM2 file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Autodesk Netfabb update.
- To make sure that your AM2 file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .AM2 file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
