To view or edit APW files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. APW is not a commonly used file extension and is used by different programs with different formats. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 60% of all APW files use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Composite Document File format or OLE2 compound document format. Compound document files work similarly to real file systems. They contain a number of independent data streams (like files in a file system) which are organized in a hierarchy of containers (like sub-directories in a file system). Compound files always start with the bytes ÐÏࡱá (hex code D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1). There is also a unique Windows component object identifier (CLSID) which is 2ddecc87-b689-4a31-ada5-025c74ae7050 or cf916c06-d17a-4a07-8548-787f4b0f99cb. The internal containers are called ACCTINFO, Contents, PFSVData, EOUtil, IWB, IWD, ControlPanel, Archive.ZStg, ApwnACESettings, ApwnShellSettings and ADS. The average file size is 1 MB with most files being between 750 KB and 5 MB in size. The file type was used 20 years ago but is still in use today. Such files are related to simulation, design, production, reaction, project, group and power.
• 10% of all APW files are associated with Any Password data. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The file size is in the range of 250 bytes to 53 KB. Files like these are about passwords.
