All about ASD Files
The ASD file type is primarily associated with Word.
What is an ASD file?
How do you open ASD files?
You need a suitable software like Word to open an ASD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ASD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ASD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

ASD file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the ASD files:
You will often come across the ASD file type. This is mainly used by one program with a specific format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 75% of all ASD files use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Compound document files work similarly to real file systems. They contain a number of independent data streams (like files in a file system) which are organized in a hierarchy of containers (like sub-directories in a file system). Compound files begin always with signature bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 (ÐÏࡱá). The app name of an ASD file is Microsoft Office Word or Microsoft Macintosh Word. There is also a CLSID, a globally-unique identifier of a COM (Component Object Model) object: f4754c9b-64f5-4b40-8af4-679732ac0607. The data in this file is stored in streams whose names are WordDocument, 1Table, SummaryInformation, DocumentSummaryInformation, CompObj and Data. The file size is in the range of 27 KB to 1 MB. It is a modern file type. Some examples of file names are Rescue.asd or AutoRecovery save of Document1.asd. Such files are related to auto, recovery, save, unsaved, document, wiederherstellen, speicherung and autosaved.
- 5% of all ASD files start with the magic bytes 47 44 01 01, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. A typical file size is 780 KB. An example of a file name is 01.asd or 02.asd. Files like these have the following tags: escalayer, reboot and achievement.
All the rest of the ASD files (20%) have different formats, often e.g. Ableton Warp Analysis. Often described as autorecovered, dokument, autorrecuperaci, word, recoverysaveof, kurtarma, otomatik, draft or kayd. If you want to find out which format your ASD file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .asd file to analyze".

an asd document backup is a special file format by Microsoft and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with ASD files
- Associate the ASD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open document backups. Because only the current version supports the latest ASD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Word update.
- To make sure that your ASD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ASD file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
