Opening an ASSET File
The ASSET file type is primarily associated with Unity.
What is an ASSET file
How to open an ASSET file
You need a suitable software like Unity to open an ASSET file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ASSET file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ASSET file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert ASSET files:
- Unity
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. ASSET files are often referred to as Unity games because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Unity asset (game resource archive file) by UnityFiles with the ASSET file extension are configuration files in YAML format for games created using Unity 3D. Unity 3D is a game engine and game development tool. These files may contain meshes, textures, 3D models, shaders, audio, or even game databases. The files are stored in the Assets folder in the Unity game directory. ASSETS files are used when building a Unity project into an executable game or when modding an existing game.
ASSET file extension format:
To view or edit ASSET files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our examination of the ASSET files comes to the following conclusion:
ASSET is a very widely used file extension. The file type includes different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 40% of all ASSET files are Unity YAML Scene files. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. The files are 380 bytes to 1 MB in size, with a median of 18 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. %TAG !u! tag:unity3d.com,2011, %YAML 1.1, m_CorrespondingSourceObject: {fileID: 0}, m_PrefabInstance: {fileID: 0}, m_PrefabAsset: {fileID: 0}, m_Name and m_ObjectHideFlags: 0. These files are attributed to avatar, settings, manager, body, editor, mesh, audio and project.
- 15% of all ASSET files save the data in UnityFS file format. UnityFS is short for "Unity File System". This Unity Game Engine package is a bundle of several compressed Unity assets. Each asset may contain 2D texture, text resources, music files, scene objects, etc. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The average file size is 680 KB with most files being between 26 KB and 2 MB in size. The keywords UnityFS, `.resS and 2019.3.0f5 are typical for these files. These files are often associated with image, withderich, naked, scenarios, chara and data.
All other ASSET files (45%) have no uniform format, the following 15 formats can be found: PNG, JSON, GZIP, pdxmesh, Metadata, entity, music, RXEA, sound and scale. These files are often connected to unit, entities, units, build, contractbanner, terrain or atlas. Just click the "Choose your .asset file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your ASSET file is.
Technical Data for ASSET File Extension
an asset serialized data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with ASSET files
- Associate the ASSET file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open serialized data files. Because only the current version supports the latest ASSET file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Unity update.
- To make sure that your ASSET file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ASSET file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
