What is a B2D file?

B2D files mostly belong to DesignCAD. An B2D file is a file that stores 2D drawing and graphic data. It is mainly used to exchange precise design information in a computer-aided design (CAD) environment.

MindCAD 2D Drawing File: Many B2D files use the Microsoft Compound format. This structure can hold layered drawing information, making it a good fit for engineering and design work.

DesignCAD 2D Drawing View File: These files also serve as viewing files for 2D designs. They are used to present the design plan clearly. More details are available on the DesignCAD Product Page.

Blue Tongue 2D Graphics Data File: A number of B2D files contain graphics data for the Blue Tongue Entertainment game engine, storing simple in-game 2D visual elements.

FilExt.com notes: You must use the right CAD or graphics tool to open a B2D file. The internal format, based on Microsoft Compound, lets the file store several streams of data at once. This format is not common in basic image or text files.

How to open B2D files

You need a suitable software like DesignCAD to open a B2D file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To find out what program is needed to open B2D files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. The B2D file extension is not common and covers different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 55% of all B2D files use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also called Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This file format is used by previous Microsoft Office programs and other Windows programs and stores the data in complex containers and sections. Header signature for the CFB format with 8-byte Hex value D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). The file contains sections that are named something like BasicGeometry, ContentsManifest and MindCAD2D. The files are on average 5 MB in size and range from 320 KB to 20 MB. The file type is relatively new. A common filename is logo milwaukee.b2d.
• 15% of all B2D files internally utilize the config file format. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. B2D files can be up to 500 bytes in size, but are often around 100 bytes - 350 bytes. The following keywords are characteristic: View, [DesignCAD 2-D] and DW2 - View 1.
